Dear Sherando Band Families,
I am excited to share with you some of the details of our planned Spring Marching Season for this year! Although this past year has presented us with many challenges, I am looking forward to getting back outside with our students, creating and forming relationships and community, and making music again together. While this will be a marching band experience like none other in the past, we will still continue to focus on what has created a “Superior” tradition in our Sherando Band Department: creating great community, supporting our students, and creating the highest quality performance experience possible, overcoming the odds ahead of us. Although there will still be further developments as we move forward, we have enough information to begin moving forward. I’ll address some of the key things throughout this letter, and as more concrete details are formed, I will continue to share updated information as I have it. Please read through this information carefully, and communicate with me any questions that you may have - we will work through this TOGETHER, just as we always have!
Schedule: Rehearsals will take place each week on Tuesday & Thursday, starting on Tuesday, March 9th. The season will tentatively last through late April/early May. Rehearsal time frames will be after school from 3:00-5:00pm, with reasonable flexibility for those attending last block classes virtually to have time to safely travel to Sherando after the conclusion of their last block class. The reason for after-school rehearsal times is due to the current A/B schedule approach of the school day class time, as we are currently unable to bring all students together during the school day class time frame. Below are the report times based on attendance at school:
1. Students attending rehearsal following in-person school attendance will report to the auditorium at 2:30pm and await further instruction for the day’s activities.
2. Students attending rehearsal that were not at school for the day will report to the main entrance and then immediately proceed to the auditorium side door entrance between 2:45pm-3:00pm for temperature screening. Those students will proceed to the auditorium after being screened and await further instruction as well.
Pre-Screening: All students will go through our temperature pre-screening process prior to participation in rehearsal for the day. For Virtual students and students who were not in school on the rehearsal day, that screening will occur upon arrival at the band room door. For students who were in school during the day of rehearsal, your temperature screening at the start of the school day will serve as your screening for that specific day.
If you are dropping off a student, they should be dropped off near the front office entrance to the school in the small parking lot next to the front office entrance. At the end of rehearsal, the pickup location is in the same area. For students who drive themselves, you should plan to park in the student parking lot as usual.
Safety Expectations: It is of the utmost importance that we adhere to the safety guidelines and mitigations that are currently in place for the in person school day attendance. These include wearing masks, use of special masks and instrument covers (as applicable), and recommended physical spacing. Also, it is important that each individual be acutely aware of their individual health - do not attend school or rehearsal if you are not feeling well!
What To Expect: This season, we will be working on skills geared toward bridging the gap between our last marching season (Fall 2019) and our next expected marching season (Fall 2021). Students will be working on a mixture of marching/movement fundamentals and music fundamentals, with the aim of producing a brief performance show product on the performance field. While the pressure of competitions may not be in its traditional form this year, we will still keep the same focus as any previous year: performing to the highest standard and to the absolute best of our ability and circumstance. Because of this, I ask that any student that plans to participate in this process to commit to the fullest extent. Consistent with prior seasons, I ask that students do not schedule tasks, work, or other events on top of our weekly rehearsal time. If an absence is an emergency, please communicate with me ahead of time, using the Student Absence Form on the Band Booster website. This form can also be found in the mailbox outside of my band room office door. Absences due to COVID exposure/quarantine may occur, and those will be worked with as they happen. If you miss classes due to illness, I ask that you do not attend rehearsal that day. Safety of our students, and their families, is a top priority throughout the entire season time frame.
Performances: At the writing of this letter, our focused planned performance will be at the end of the season for our parents, and additional spectators as allowed by local and state guidelines. I will share further plans for potential performances as they become finalized. If capacity limits at athletic events are raised (in compliance with regulations set by the state government), then we may have the opportunity to attend and perform at the home football games hosted here at SHS in April. If that changes, I will notify everyone as soon as possible.
Cost to Participate: There will be no required charge to participate with this 2021 Spring marching season. If you have not already paid our typical yearly Band Fee ($150) for the 2020-2021 school, and your family is in a comfortable position to be able to do so, I would ask that you consider contributing this amount to help offset the cost of some of our expenses for this experience (instructors, potential show drill designing, equipment, etc). Any fees that you elect to pay can be paid to the Sherando HS Band Booster Association, either by check, or on the MySchoolBucks website. If you have any questions about this at all, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
With all that we have endured this past year, I am excited to get to offer this opportunity for our students! This will be a time of flexibility for us all, and it will require patience from all of us to each other as we move through the initial steps. I am looking forward to getting started! Please feel free to reach out to me anytime via email, at firstname.lastname@example.org. GO WARRIORS!!
